“Every single second is an opportunity to change your life, because in any moment you can change the way you feel.” ~ Rhonda Byrne
I loved the freedom that this brought me when I realised it. I had been so bogged down in my circumstances, my situation, and the actions of others that I had lost sight of the fact that nothing on the outside had the ability to affect me.
Nothing that happens on the outside can make me feel anything (good or bad) although at times it really, really feels that way.
Nothing anyone says to me or about me can affect how I’m feeling, only I can do that by the meaning I give to it.
And yet so many of us live in that world – the world where we believe our spouse, children, the traffic, burnt porridge, an opinionated colleague, the President of the USA have the power over how we feel.
It is only ever my thoughts about these things that affect how I feel.
Do you know how liberating it is to know this?
When I came to appreciate this I felt freer than I had ever done in my life. For me it meant that I was no longer at the mercy of others and burnt porridge! It meant that I could regain what I had lost or thought I’d lost – my happiness. It meant that I became the one to steer my course. It meant that someone else’s mood no longer affected my day, or my life.
A colleague in a miserable mood doesn’t have to affect us, it’s her mood, not ours.
An angry exchange with our partner doesn’t have to affect us if we choose to appreciate that their anger is not who they are and isn’t about us….unless we choose to think so.
Oh and the weather! Whether it’s blue sky or thick fog, the weather doesn’t have that kind of power over us. The day I realised that whether the sun was shining or it was pouring with rain I alone was responsible for my happiness I laughed.
How much freer would you feel if you took back your happiness, your joy, your wellbeing?
And so to midlife – do I let the judgments of others on what I should be wearing, or putting on my skin, or feeling about myself affect my joy and happiness and wellbeing?
Believe me there would be whole industries out of business if only we realised that our joy and happiness and wellbeing reside within.
